The power of baby massage and why touch matters in your baby’s first year

When a baby is born, their very first language is touch. Long before they understand words or even begin to recognise faces, they feel the world around them through skin-to-skin contact. Gentle, nurturing touch plays a vital role in how babies grow, develop and feel safe. That is where baby massage comes in.

Baby massage is more than a relaxing moment between parent and child. Studies have shown that regular massage can support a baby’s physical and emotional wellbeing in many ways. One of the key benefits is bonding. When you massage your baby, you release a hormone called oxytocin, often nicknamed the “love hormone.”
This same hormone helps your baby feel calm, connected and secure. It is a simple act, yet it builds trust and strengthens the bond you share.
Wind
For babies who struggle with wind, colic or constipation, massage can also bring comfort. Gentle strokes on the tummy help stimulate the digestive system and can ease discomfort. Parents often tell me how surprised they are to see their baby relax or even drift off to sleep after a short massage routine. It is a natural way to help soothe those unsettled moments.
Beyond the physical benefits, baby massage offers parents something very special too. In the early weeks and months, life can feel overwhelming.
You are adjusting to new routines, sleepless nights and constant changes. Taking even ten minutes for massage creates a calm, mindful space where you can slow down, tune into your baby and enjoy being present. Many parents find it gives them confidence as they learn to read their baby’s cues and discover how their little one likes to be touched.
Another wonderful part of baby massage is that it is for everyone. Mums, dads, grandparents and carers can all learn and share in the experience. It is a lovely way for partners to be hands-on in those early days, especially if mum is feeding and spending a lot of time with the baby. Touch is a universal way of saying “I am here, I love you and you are safe.”
Newbies
If you are new to baby massage, it can feel a little daunting at first. That is why classes exist, to guide you through techniques in a safe and supportive setting. Once you know the basics, you can build massage into your daily routine, whether that is after a bath, before bedtime or whenever your baby seems ready for quiet time.
The first year of life is a whirlwind of change, but small, nurturing acts like massage can make a big difference. They help your baby feel secure, support their development and give you precious moments of connection. In the end, it is not just about the massage itself, but the love and presence that come with it.
